Let me start right out of the gate with a reminder about our STORM ALERT XTREME. This is our annual severe weather training event coming up on Saturday, November 15, at the BJCC during the 2009 Birmingham International Auto Show. You will be trained in severe storm spotting, and we encourage all of our Skywatchers to attend this every year; you just cannot get enough training. It all begins at 9:30 and finishes by 3:30. And, everyone that attends Storm Alert Xtreme gets free admission to the Alabama International Auto Show. There is no admission charge, and no need to register. Just show up, but get there early for a good seat. We had a packed house last year.
Chilly start this morning with temperatures ranging from the upper 20s to the mid 30s – a fairly typical range for Central Alabama. Some reinforcing cold air will keep it chilly today with highs not expected to reach more than the upper 50s.
Another chilly start Monday morning, too, with a slight warming of afternoon highs as we stay dry between systems.
Tuesday the upper trough to our west gets closer and rain begins to become an issue. I think most of us will stay dry on Tuesday but the better chances for rain will be across northwest sections. With a southwesterly flow aloft, we’ll stay in a favorable pattern for rain chances through Friday.
Computer models are still not in good agreement as we head into the latter part of the week, so confidence is not especially high in the forecast, but I think we’ve got the trends right. As the upper level trough moves slowly and digs some we should see rain chances each day until the weather system finally exits the area on Friday. This should pave the way for a cold weekend with lows in the 30s and highs again struggling to reach the lower 60s or so.
Severe weather a concern for parts of Texas and Oklahoma on Monday and Tuesday, but it is not looking especially promising. It continues to be a watch and see scenario as we get closer to the event.
And in the tropics, Hurricane Paloma is rapidly degenerating after coming ashore in Central Cuba as a Category 3 hurricane late yesterday afternoon. The sheared environment is having a devastating impact on the storm which is surely a blessing for the folks in Cuba as Paloma is the fourth tropical system to affect that country this season.

I wanted to thank the folks at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church for the invitation to participate in their health fair yesterday. It is always a pleasure to talk with people about the weather. I hope you have a great upcoming week. Godspeed.
