Weather people across Central Alabama are singing the same song as we stay dry, dry dry, and we want to be wet, wet, wet! Dry is probably good news for the race at Talladega today. If you are headed out to the Talladega Speedway you’ll need lots of sun screen and some cold water with afternoon temperatures expected to top out in the lower 80s.
And dry is the story into the upcoming week. It still looks to me that we will be dry through Wednesday. By Thursday a weak disturbance in the 500 millibar pattern edges just close enough to Alabama to help set off some scattered showers. And the GFS keeps this weak disturbance along with an old front that has sunk into Tennessee from the north in our area. This disturbance and old front plus good heating should result in scattered showers for the end of the week and into the weekend. The GFS went somewhat bullish on that disturbance yesterday, at least, in the MOS numbers. But the run this morning has backed off on that, and I think that is the right trend. Scattered showers, however, will not end the drought but some of us will be lucky and see a little rain.
Temperatures will be close to or slightly above seasonal values especially with the highs.
The longer range GFS outlooks are still not very optimistic for organized rain chances. There may be some chance for rain around May 9th, but that is well into voodoo territory, and I would not want to be wagering anything on that forecast.
I’m looking forward to heading out today for a few days at one of my favorite Alabama State Parks, Paul Grist. One of the beauties of that park is NO CELL COVERAGE. I can just put my feet up and enjoy the warm weather and the beautiful lake and soak in the solitude enjoying nature in all of its splendor. Have a great week!!
