The latest edition of the ABC 33/40 Weather Xtreme Video is available in the player below, and on iTunes…

Nope, no video from Mt. Cheaha today as I’m back at the ranch, so to speak. And am I mad about the weather yesterday. You’d think with a severe thunderstorm watch plus a weak front plus lots of low level moisture plus great heating that I could garner just a bit of rain for my yard – but NO!! I share the same woes as the Birmingham airport and much of Jefferson and Shelby counties which remained dry even with all the great conditions to get rain. Oh, well, I can remain optimistic for more showers in the coming week.

But for today and Sunday I really expect the weather to remain dry with somewhat lowered humidity. Even though a weak front has moved the area, the main impact will be lowered humidity as drier air filters into the region from the north. Temperatures should climb into the lower 90s for highs. And I think tomorrow will remain dry with less humidity, too. In fact, I think there is a possibility we will see some low temperatures tomorrow morning in the upper 50s – not bad for late July. This really has been an unusual summer with so many fronts making their way into the Southeast.

As we get into the first of next week, the pattern remains fairly unchanged but one that will be good for us. The east coast trough remains in place and meanders a bit actually retrograding a little and getting a bit stronger. The trough axis will remain close to Central Alabama so I believe we could see numerous showers and thunderstorms on some of the days next week. While scattered showers will not break our drought, they will help to some extent plus the clouds could shave a few degrees off the daily highs. The problem, of course, is that I can’t really say which days will see the best chances for storms. With the trough axis in our vicinity we’ll certainly remain ripe for showers each day of the upcoming week.

By next week, the latest GFS model guidance suggests a strengthening Bermuda high as the overall pattern reduces in amplitude. This means the westerlies retreat to the northern tier of the US but with a moist environment showers will remain in the forecast.

And the GFS maintains this trend well into the longer range, so no real change to the weather situation. I guess that is good since that means no strong signs of extreme heat.

I’ll be headed up to Hamilton today for a safety fair a the local Wal-Mart supercenter. It will be nice to see all of our friends in Hamilton and Marion County. I really enjoyed talking to the kids in the reading program at the Tuscaloosa libraries yesterday. The rain was nice to see, too, but I’m still mad that I didn’t get any rain at my place. And it was great fun at the Barons game yesterday evening as I got to throw out the first pitch. I hope that you have a great weekend. God bless.
