Rain and showers have been persistent this morning and early this afternoon in a fairly wide zone across North/Central Alabama.
At 1:00, most of those showers were from Walker and Jefferson Counties eastward, generally along I-20, to places like Pell City, Anniston and into Cleburne County along the Georgia border. Some of the showers were as far south as Clay County and North Bibb County. These were moving almost due east.
The National Weather Service continues a Flash Flood Warning for Central Walker County, including Cordova, until 2:30. Additional rain amounts of 1 inch are possible.
There was a separate smaller area of showers over NW Alabama in Colbert and North Franklin Counties and moving very little.
Satellite photographs show that the clouds are extensive, especially over the north two-thirds of Alabama and the latest surface analysis showed that a low-pressure area was in the early stages of development over the NW Gulf of Mexico off the coast of Central Texas.
Naturally, the extensive cloud cover has held temperatures in check. At 1:00 this afternoon, it was only in the mid 70s over much of North Alabama and only 68 at Gadsden Airport. It was only 71 at Birmingham Airport and the rain total since 7:00 this morning is 0.19. A similar amount of rain at Anniston Airport.
Down south it was quite a bit warmer with 84 in Mobile and Dothan and 85 in Evergreen.
