Cold air continues to pour into Alabama this morning, on NW winds of 10-15 mph. As of 5 am, it’s already down to 20 degrees in Trussville, and it’s still almost 2 hours until sunrise. As shown in the model air trajectories below, our air is coming from the snow-covered areas in Minnesota and Iowa, then only modifying some as it finally gets south of the snowpack across southern Illinois, Kentucky, and Tennessee.

Temperatures over eastern Iowa, where today’s air is coming from, are near zero. The recent warm weather is helping some, causing the ground to release some heat into the air as it comes south, but not enough to keep it from being very cold in Alabama this morning. Think about wearing extra layers to work today. With temps 15-20 and winds still 10-15 mph, wind chills will be below 10 at times until 10 am. Even sunshine won’t be able to do too much, with highs only around 32, with north Alabama staying in the 20s, and even MGM only reaching 34-38. At least the wind should calm down some by afternoon.

After another cold day tomorrow (highs in the 40s), we’ll be back in the 60s by Christmas Eve.
