….Decided to hold off on the “rest of the story” as Paul Harvey would say, concerning the huge April 3-4, 1974 tornado disaster. Will wait till after the current active weather is over and probably post the rest of it about Monday. Still a lot more to tell including the most memorable telephone call I ever received in 32 years at the USWB/NWS.
….This blog will be as busy as a snake crossing U.S 280 through Saturday morning. Watch for frequent updates.
…Remember, it was 21 years ago this morning, April 3, 1987, that a heavy wet blanket of snow was on the ground here. It was called the Dogwood Snowstorm because all the dogwoods and azaleas were in full bloom and all the trees were green. Even Montgomery got an inch.
* 6 inches at Birmingham
* 8 to 9 inches in Fort Payne
* 11 inches in Valley Head
Never before had there been snow on the ground in April
….How about 39 degrees in Jefferson, North Carolina this afternoon and even some light sleet in Hot Springs, Virginia! Tis the beauty of early April–almost anything can happen!
