Looks like the showers will be much fewer today than we saw yesterday. And the extensive coverage of rain yesterday put some moisture in the soil, so afternoon highs will be tempered a bit as we climb into the lower and mid 90s at most spots. I’ll take a few degrees shaved off the highs especially in the heat of the summer.

The upper ridge continues to weaken ever so slowly as a series of vigorous short waves move across the top of the ridge. That will eventually flatten the ridge and establish a weak trough over the eastern half of the country. This will place Alabama in a slight northwesterly flow pattern which should at least eliminate the extreme heat and put us back on track with temperatures representative of early and mid August.

While showers will be fewer today, I expect good chances of showers to return on Saturday and continue for much of the rest of the next seven days. Showers are not expected to be widespread but at least there will be chances each day.

The SPC has outlooked an area in the North Central US for a slight risk of severe storms today and that area migrates eastward on Saturday. There is a potential for isolated severe storms in the Southeast US, but nothing but marginally severe storms.

Tropics have seen another storm fizzle! Emily has had real trouble with the terrain of eastern Cuba and Hispaniola. NHC has downgraded Emily but as it gets into the Atlantic and puts some distance between itself and that terrain, I do expect Emily to regain her status as a tropical storm. Models have come together on a solution that keeps it away from Florida and recurves it into the Atlantic.

The general troughiness over the eastern half of the country sticks around but by the end of the period – around August 20th – the 594 contour raises its ugly head once again, so summer heat is not over just yet.

I had a wonderful lunch yesterday with Bill Murray as we met to discuss a few items related to the upcoming national conference of the National Weather Association. The planning for that meeting has been extensive and lots of that planning are now coming together. I hope you have a wonderful day and Godspeed.
