COOL MORNING: Many Alabama communities are in the cool 50s early this morning; coolest spot I can find at 5:00 is Valley Head with 50 degrees. Desoto State Park is at 55, while Birmingham reports 58. The air, needless to say, is very dry, and today will be a sunny day with low humidity and a high in the mid to upper 80s.
REST OF THE WEEK: Not much change all week. Sunny warm days, fair pleasant nights through Thursday. Highs around 90, lows in the 60s. On Friday, a surface front moves in from the north, but with very little available moisture, it looks like any showers that form along the front Friday afternoon will be very isolated.
THE WEEKEND: A few surge of dry air drops into Alabama, meaning sunny days and fair nights. Highs will stay close to 90, with lows in the 60s. Maybe some 50s early Saturday morning across the cooler valleys.
TROPICS: Lots of action, which you expect in mid-September. Hurricane Igor is near category 5 strength with top winds of 150 mph in the Central Atlantic. And, behind Igor is Tropical Storm Julia in the East Atlantic. Both Igor and Julia seem to be in a position to recurve into the North Atlantic well before reaching the East Coast of the U.S. Certainly not candidates to enter the Gulf of Mexico due to their high latitude.
A tropical wave in the Caribbean is expected to become Tropical Storm Karl in coming days; this one will move over the Yucatan Peninsula, with the ultimate destination the northern Mexican coast, most likely. The good news is that we don’t see any system on the board now posing a threat to the Central Gulf Coast. But, the wave train continues over Africa, and it looks like the tropics will stay busy for the foreseeable future. See the Weather Xtreme video for all the details.
WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 30 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes.
