HOT DAY IN MAY: Numerical guidance continues to suggest we will see a high very close to 90 today and tomorrow across much of Alabama. Seems like the good soil moisture has kept us a little below forecast highs during the past two days, but as the soil gets drier, the chance of reaching 90 goes up. No doubt it will feel like summer today and tomorrow, although humidity values won’t be as oppressive as what we expect in July and August.
COOLER WEEKEND: Not much change in our overall thinking for the weekend. A cold front will pass through during the pre-dawn hours Saturday, and could squeeze out a few isolated showers. But, with limited moisture and weak dynamics rain will be very light and spotty; many places won’t see rain at all. The showers will end by mid-morning Saturday, and the day should be otherwise partly sunny and cooler with a high in the mid to upper 70s. For Sunday, the GFS is printing a high of only 72 with a good supply of sunshine. The old front will begin to lift northward as warm front at some point, and that could bring a shower or two to North Alabama late Sunday or Sunday night, but widespread or heavy rain is not expected. Bottom line is the weekend looks very nice with very few showers and highs in the 70s.
NEXT WEEK: We might consider mentioning some risk of a shower Monday, but it looks like the warm front will be well north of us by then, so we figure the weather will be generally dry and warm for at least the first half of the week with highs back in the 80s along with higher humidity levels under a strong upper ridge. To the west, a deep trough over the western U.S. will set the stage for some very active weather across the Southern Plains, but the ridge will keep most of the serious storm action well to the north and west. In fact, the 00Z GFS really keeps us dry through the entire week. We have seen some runs that bring a weakening front in here with some risk of showers Thursday and Friday, but even if that happens we don’t see any serious severe weather or heavy rain threat.
VOODOO LAND: No sign of any serious storm systems for the next 15 days as the storm track remains well to the north. Sure looks like temperatures will be mostly above average, with rain below average for much of the rest of May.
