An upper level disturbance passed across the area this morning, triggering an area of rain and storms that moved into Georgia around mid-morning. Some heavy rain fell over East Alabama.
A second upper level disturbance is passing across Alabama early this afternoon. It is producing a large area of rain over North Central Alabama with storms over South Central and South Alabama. Areal flood advisories were required for Marengo County, where over two inches of rain had fallen.
RAINFALL AMOUNTS FROM SKYWATCHERS:
…Terry Sasser in Gardendale…1.93 through 1:30…he thinks it may be a three inch day
…John Talbot in Concord…0.67 through 1:30
…Kim in Alabaster…one inch through 12:30
…0.31 so far here in Trussville through 1:30
…0.38 at the Birmingham Airport through 1:30
ACCIDENTS
Be careful out there. John Talbot reports a serious accident on Bankhead Hhway at 2nd Avenue. Also a vehicle over the the edge of the interstate on I-59 just past Airport Highway.
LOOKING AHEAD: The disturbance will continue northeastward today and open the door for a cool front to push through the area. Drier air will begin to filter into the area overnight, giving us a partly cloudy and less humid day on Monday.
We have been calling for dry conditions for much of the week ahead, but there is a potential fly in the ointment. The GFS model has been hinting at the development of a bit of an easterly wedge, which would put us in a cool, moist low level flow. This would mean clouds, a few showers and an easterly breeze. If the models continue in this trend, we might have to put showers in the forecast.
PASSING SEASON
The sound of a gentle rain on this Sunday morning is symbolic of the passing of the seasons. As we head from August to September over the next couple of days, to the casual observer it appears we are just flipping pages on the calendar. But to weather humans, it is the passing of a meteorological season. By Tuesday, we will be entering meteorological autumn, although until September 21st, astronomically we will still be in summer. Today seems like a September day to me. Snoopy said September rains made him lonesome. I love them.
