Unfortunately there were very few showers across Central Alabama yesterday afternoon thanks in part to the cluster to the north and the weak low pressure in the eastern Gulf putting us between systems. While that combination is easing away, the upper ridge will be making its influence felt more strongly for Alabama over the next several days. This means the heat will be going up as we head toward the upper 90s – perhaps to three digits – along with very few afternoon showers.
The upper ridge builds into the area Sunday and Monday as the slight weakness or troughiness that we’ve seen for the last day or so pulls out to the northeast. The ridge builds into the eastern half of the country strongly through the end of the week. By the end of the week, a fairly strong short wave could bring at least a small increase in rain chances plus the hope of knocking a few degrees off the afternoon heat. That weakness aloft stays with us into next weekend.
Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday could see some high heat index values with those climbing into the range of 105 to 110, so please adjust activities for the heat and stay hydrated.
SPC has a slight risk for the area from western Lake Superior to eastern Colorado. For the most part, the main risk for severe storms stays in the Upper Midwest for the next couple of days. There are a few areas of clouds in the Atlantic Basin, however, nothing appears likely to develop into a tropical system for the next couple of days.
The long range outlook has changed again. A couple of days ago the GFS suggested a fairly deep trough over the eastern US. Then that solution was lost yesterday. But hooray, it’s back today. Though not quite as deep as a couple of days ago, the idea of a trough along the East Coast lowers temperatures for us and perhaps allows a small increase in rain chances. Nice to see this optimistic solution return.
