EASTERN HEAT NOSES INTO ALABAMA: The blistering heat over the eastern third of the nation has certainly been the big weather headline nationally in recent days, with triple digits from South Carolina to New England. The upper high responsible for the heat will slip into Alabama from the east, and temperatures will be trending upward in coming days. We are projecting mid 90s today, and it sure looks like upper 90s are possible tomorrow, especially for areas east of I-65. The GFS is printing 99 for Birmingham tomorrow, with the NAM just behind at 98. That should be the hottest day, with temperatures slipping back a few degrees Friday as the ridge begins to break down. The northern half of the state should be generally dry today and tomorrow, but a late afternoon or evening shower or storm is not out of the question Friday as a surface boundary approaches from the north.
OUR WEEKEND: That surface front will drift into extreme North Alabama Saturday, and we will mention a chance of scattered showers and storms, along with highs closer to 90. The front will stall and fizzle out, and the weather for Sunday and early next week looks very typical for mid-summer, with partly sunny, hot days and some risk of an afternoon shower or thunderstorm in a few spots.
NEXT WEEK AND BEYOND: Another upper high tries to build across the Deep South by the middle of next week, with mid 90s likely by Wednesday. See the Weather Xtreme video for details; no sign of any tropical trouble for Alabama or the Central Gulf Coast for the next two weeks, but we all know the Atlantic basin is like a power keg, and needs to be watched closely.
TODAY IN THE TROPICS: A wave is coming off the Yucatan peninsula this morning, and still has some potential to attain tropical storm status during the next 36 hours. Most dynamic models now point this one toward the northeast coast of Mexico; see the Weather Xtreme video for details.
