Early this afternoon some scattered thunderstorms were already moving into extreme West Alabama–most of them near the Mississippi border. They are not numerous yet, but they will be increasing in number and intensity as the afternoon goes on. Some of those, because of the deep tropical moist air, will dump very heavy rain.

Scattered showers and a few thunderstorms are a bit more numerous over extreme South Alabama.

RACE AGAINST TIME
It was officially 88 degrees at Birmingham Airport at 12 noon. It appears fairly certain that this will be the 45th day in a row with temperatures 90 or hotter. About the only thing that can stop it is a quick increase in clouds or a shower or thunderstorm developing nearby. Here is a round up of high noon hot temperatures around Alabama. All of these are from official hourly reporting stations.

…..88 Huntsville, heat index 95
…..88 Gadsden, heat index 96
…..89 Tuscaloosa, heat index 98
…..88 Birmingham, heat index 94
…..93 Montgomery, heat index 103
…..90 Anniston, heat index 96
…..88 Alexander City, heat index 96
…..88 Mobile Regional Airport, heat index 100

Next winter when we are all shivering, some of us will probably yearn for a day like today. Don’t count me as one of those.
