Much of North and Central Alabama has been included in a high risk for severe weather today and tonight by the Storm Prediction Center. Nearly all of the various weather elements are coming together for a very active severe weather day across much of the Southeast US with the potential for all types of severe weather including tornadoes, large hail, damaging wind, and heavy rain.

Some rain and thunderstorms occurred overnight with rainfall amounts varying from one quarter to one and one quarter inches in various rain gauges. Additional rain of 2 to 3 inches is possible with the storms during the day today.

Instability with CAPE values up to 2000, low level moisture with dew points approaching 70, upper wind with speed max to near 100 mph and low level jet of 50 to 60 mph will contribute to the potential for serious severe weather today. I encourage everyone to keep up with the latest weather information and be prepared to act if the weather turns threatening where you are.

Some storms were already ongoing this morning with several warnings already. Much of Louisiana, Mississippi, West Tennessee and a good portion of Arkansas were under tornado watches as well. Additional watches will be forth coming as the whole weather system advances eastward. The upper low will be ejecting to the northeast toward the Great Lakes while the surface low moves into the Ohio River Valley dragging a cold front through the Southeast.

The weather becomes much calmer Sunday and into early next week. The trough won’t go completely by us until late Tuesday providing some clouds Monday and Tuesday and perhaps a small chance for a passing shower on Tuesday. Once the trough gets by, we dry out and warm up with highs by Thursday back to near 80 degrees. Our next rain chance is expected on Saturday, a week from today, with another potentially strong event, but let’s get through this one first before tackling that one.
