THIS AFTERNOON: Temperatures across Alabama generally are not quite as hot as forecast today… at 2:00 Birmingham is reporting 92 degrees; other observations include 91 in Gadsden, 93 in Tuscaloosa, and 94 in Anniston. Always fun to see the conditions at Mt. Cheaha; Alabama’s highest point (2,407 feet) south of Anniston… they are at a comfortable 86 degrees. We do note a few very small, isolated showers on radar; all of those will fade quickly once the sun sets this evening.

TOMORROW AND FRIDAY: Both the GFS and the NAM are printing a high of 98 tomorrow… I get the idea that might be a little too hot, but mid to upper 90s are a fairly good bet with the upper high nosing into Alabama from the east. The hottest readings, most likely will be north of I-20 and east of I-65, where the heights will be at their highest. Then, the heat backs off a few degrees Friday as the ridge weakens. Tomorrow should be mostly dry; any showers will be few and far between, much like today. We will mention some risk of a shower or storm late Friday of Friday night with the approach of a surface front to the north.

THE WEEKEND: The GFS is printing a high of only 89 for Birmingham on Saturday with cloudy periods and a risk of scattered showers and thunderstorms. The front will stall out and fizzle out over North Alabama, so we will maintain some risk of mostly afternoon and evening showers and storms in scattered spots Sunday and into early next week, with highs mostly in the low 90s. Very routine summer weather for Alabama.

TROPICS: The wave over the Southwest Gulf of Mexico still has some potential to become Tropical Storm Bonnie before making landfall around the southern tip of Texas tomorrow morning. Heavy rain will be the main threat. Elsewhere, the tropics are quiet.

AIR QUALITY ALERT: A code orange air quality alert has been issued for the Birmingham metro area tomorrow (Jefferson and Shelby Counties) for ground level ozone; you are encouraged to…
