HEAT LEVELS RISE A BIT: Still very remarkable to note that Birmingham has experienced only one day this month (July 10) with a high of 90 degrees or higher, and this is July 17. But, the big upper high north of the state should finally push us up into the low 90s today and tomorrow with a partly sunny sky both days. Widely scattered showers and storms are likely this afternoon, becoming a little more numerous tomorrow as the air aloft should be a tad colder.
FRIDAY AND THE WEEKEND: Moist air covers the state, and the upper high to the north will dissipate, so we expect fairly routine summer weather this weekend with mixed sun and clouds each day along with the chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms, mostly during the afternoon and evening hours. No wash-out, but just be ready for the occasional shower or summer thunderstorm. The high should be in the 87-90 degree range each afternoon.
NEXT WEEK: The 00Z GFS has backed off on the idea of drier air moving into North Alabama early in the week, and we all know that is probably the correct solution considering the fact this is late July. So, we will just broad brush the forecast with the routine summer elements for most of the week. Highs will be around 90 degrees. No sign of any excessive heat around here anytime soon (upper 90s or triple digits).
TROPICS: All remains quiet across the Atlantic basin, and tropical storm formation is not expected this week.
GULF COAST WEATHER: Looking pretty good. The standard 6 to 8 hours of sunshine each day for the Gulf Coast from Panama City west to Gulf Shores through the weekend with some risk of a passing storm each day in scattered spots. Highs along the immediate coast will be in the upper 80s, and the sea water temperature this morning at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab is 82 degrees.
