Some pre-frontal showers and thunderstorms moved through portions of North and Central Alabama overnight. In fact, some of that pre-frontal activity was still occurring this morning from just west of Tuscaloosa to near Jackson, MS. I got some rain after midnight at Mt. Cheaha but my rain gauge in Helena was missed. The front is expected to sag into northern Alabama today and move on through Monday. This will bring some relief to the high humidity as much drier air moves into Central Alabama.
The relief will begin Monday as the humidity drops somewhat, but then the drier air becomes more firmly entrenched on Tuesday continuing through the rest of the week and probably into next weekend. While this will not eliminate the heat, it will lower the humidity a great deal with at least 10 degrees off the dew points so the heat won’t feel quite as hot. In fact, the GFS MOS numbers suggest dew points as low as 59 by late Thursday and Friday. Now won’t that feel good?
Today the main threat of showers and thunderstorms should be from the Birmingham area southward. And as that drier air filters into the area, we’ll see chances for showers eliminated for the upcoming week after today.
No specific areas for slight risk of severe storms today though the SPC is watching the area of southern Louisiana to Southwest Alabama for some chance of isolated severe weather primarily in the form of damaging wind.
The drier air is thanks to the trough on the East Coast of the US. The GFS was under forecasting the strength of that trough yesterday, so with the stronger trough the drier air will be more prevalent. And the trough is not expected to move much keeping us in a generally northwesterly flow pattern bringing the drier air into the state.
Tropics now have TD6 which is likely to become a named storm – Danielle – later today or tomorrow. The good news is that this storm is likely to stay well out in the Atlantic and not become a threat to the US.
Looking into voodoo country, the ridge does build back into the area briefly but then we see another East Coast trough which should moderate our temperatures a bit as we head into September.

Thanks for staying tuned to the Weather Xtreme Video. James Spann will be back with the next one first thing Monday morning. I’m going to continue to enjoy the sights on Mt. Cheaha but will have to head down the mountain later for my job at Apple computers. Got to run some much needed errands, too, to get some additional things for some projects I’ll be working on when I come back on Monday. I hope you enjoy the day and I know we’ll all enjoy the reduced humidity. Godspeed.
