The latest edition of the ABC 33/40 Weather Xtreme Video is available in the player below and on iTunes…

The rains came yesterday, but not nearly as much as I was hoping for. Nearly everyone got some rain, but the southern portion of the state got more rain than the central portion. I would say that half inch was fairly uniform, though you can see in the Storm Total Precipitation estimate from the Birmingham WSR-88D that the area around Smith Lake got missed completely.

Another good thing from the rain was the improvement in air quality. The numbers for today are still in the moderate category, but we are in the lower portion of the moderate category.

It’s humid out there this morning, but drier air is poised to come into the region on a good northerly flow today. I would expect to see the wind today in the 10 to 20 mph range with some gustiness, too. Unfortunately, temperatures won’t show much change as we push the 90-degree mark once again.

We should stay dry but warm for the end of the week, and then on Saturday and Sunday and into the next week, we will see scattered showers as a possibility once again. The interesting thing we will need to watch is the possible development of large clusters of storms well north of Central Alabama. These mesoscale convective complexes can last for hours and travel hundreds of miles. The GFS is hinting at that, but the specifics will come in the smaller scale features, so this is not something I’m comfortable forecasting in a specific way that far out.

In the longer ranger, the GFS has held onto the development of a fairly strong trough over the East Coast of the US around June 29th which could mean another cool front and another reasonably good shot at rain. But by the end of the forecast cycle around July 5th we come under a ridge that stretches from coast to coast.

Tropics remain quiet with nothing to mention from that part of the world.

I hope to have the next Weather Xtreme Video posted by 9 am Thursday morning. If all goes well, I hope to be posting from Mt. Cheaha. Have a great Wednesday and God bless.
