Hurricane Ike came ashore this morning around 2:30 am at Galveston, Texas, as a strong Category 2 storm on the Saffir-Simpson scale. The storm is already making the turn northward and will likely pass the Dallas-Fort Worth area around noon time giving that large population a rather rainy, blustery day. Ike is forecast to be a tropical storm by this evening and then a depression tomorrow as it recurves to the northeast along and ahead of a frontal boundary. Watches and warnings are already posted along the track with many areas under Flash Flood Watches with the possibility of 4 to 7 inches of rain across the mid-section of the country.
With Ike recurving and staying will to our northwest, the weather here should be great but fairly warm today. That front will sag into the area by late Sunday giving us our best chance for some rain late Sunday and through the first half of Monday.
By Monday afternoon, the front should be out of Central Alabama with improving weather. And with the front should come at least a hint of fall with drier air. In fact some spots across Northeast Alabama may well see morning lows into the 50s by Thursday morning – now won’t that feel nice.
Looks like mid week through the weekend should be dry as the trough moves east of Alabama by the end of the week bringing us back under a ridge before the next system a week from Monday.
And the long range outlook suggests a series of troughs moving quickly through the flow which should provide some chance of rain every three or four days with no sign of anything extreme in the way of cold or heat.

The deer sure appreciate the corn we brought. Only took them about 40 minutes to show up after we arrived. I expect to have the next Weather Xtreme Video posted around 8 am or so tomorrow morning. I’ve got some serious reading to do – me and Clive Cussler – and perhaps a nap appointment. Ah, what a life I lead on Mt. Cheaha. God bless.
