NOTE: This is a new feature (but not every day). It will appear not only on the blog, but also the afternoon E-Forecast, the 7-Day Planner and the Weather Fax. It will be very brief. May choose one each week for Weather Brains, but no competition to Brian’s Professor Peters feature which is much more detailed
TODAY’S SUBJECT: Thundershowers
I have not heard the word, “thundershowers” in a weather forecast in many years. In earlier days, even in the 1950s, it was the standard wording when showers had thunder and lightning involved. Some folks said back then that the word “thunderstorm” sounded more ominous and should be saved for storms with lots of lightning and thunder.
I never liked that because a “thundershower” could be a “thunderstorm” in minutes after the first stroke of lightning. I don’t miss “thundershowers,” but I do miss some weather terms that disappeared over the years. More on that later.
When is the last time you heard “thundershower?”
Look for a variety of subjects: some barely weather related.
