Two major weather features for us to watch – Irene on the East Coast and heat in the Central US. We’re kind of stuck between the two systems, and even though Irene is hundreds of miles away, she is helping to influence our weather with a northerly flow that is bringing some drier air into the region. That is somewhat good news unless you want rain, in which case that is bad news. The drier air will keep us rain free through about the middle of next week.
For now, Irene has made landfall in the vicinity of Cape Lookout, NC. Irene missed my pick of Wilmington and JB’s pick of Cape Hatteras, so it looks like we have a draw from WeatherBrains last Monday. Irene will continue on the track that will keep the center of the storm right on the coast line until it reaches New England where Irene will begin to decay to tropical storm intensity. Coastal flooding due to the onshore flow will be a major problem for the people from North Carolina to New England along with heavy rain. QPF forecasters project about 10 inches of rain on the path immediately ahead of Irene with the amounts tapering off to 4 inches over northern New England. All of this rain will aggravate the situation for the Northeast US where some areas have seen significant rain recently.
Over the South Central US, the ridge remains the big story with heat and dryness. 100 plus values for highs in Texas and Oklahoma again yesterday.
Not much changes in the weather pattern as Irene moves steadily out of the picture. Irene should be in northern Maine by early Tuesday which the upper ridge keeps things hot and dusty over Texas. We remain between the two, so we will continue to see a northerly flow through the first of the upcoming week keeping us dry through Wednesday. But as the ridge builds in our direction we will also see the drier air abate allowing moisture to return along with isolated showers. And we pretty much remain that way through the weekend. A front poses some chance for rain into the latter part of the Labor Day weekend, but that really verges on voodoo country.
Looking out into voodoo country, general troughiness returns around the 8th of September with the ridge building back around the 11th. So no real sign of an end to the heat just yet.
