Interesting phenomenum this morning with isolated showers across Central Alabama. Not the time of day that you would expect to see showers, and many of them appear to be in or near areas where scattered showers occurred yesterday. I expect to see these morning showers gradually dissipate, but with dew points in the lower 60s and some good afternoon heating we should see some isolated storms again this afternoon.
Bill Murray has been posting on the major tornado event at Greensburg, KS, yesterday. The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) showed 32 tornado reports from yesterday. I’m sure there were not 32 tornadoes since some reports are likely to be duplicates from the same long-lived tornado. The SPC log reflects over 60 injuries and at least one fatality at Greensburg. Our thoughts and prayers most definitely go out to those folks.
And unfortunately, the Central Plains will be under the gun again today with a moderate risk outlooked from Central Texas all the way to Western Iowa. The risk area shifts slightly eastward on Sunday. The main culprit is a very strong trough on the eastern side of the Rockies.
The disturbance that brought those showers to the area yesterday has moved well north of Central Alabama and we’ll be back into an air mass situation today and Sunday. We’ll dry out and cool off a bit into the upcoming work week as a strong closed low develops off the Carolina coast.
We stay dry through much of the week, but warm up. By Friday and Saturday, a weak trough edges closer to Alabama that may help to enhance our chances for showers. Once again this does not look like a drought buster and with our rainfall deficit over one foot, we could use a prolonged rain event. But there does not appear to be one on the horizon.
I did not spend much time in voodoo land. The longer range progs show a trend to moving the westerlies further north which would help to maintain the relatively dry conditions across the Southeast US. So no good features to hang our rain hopes on.
Busy Saturday as I head out this morning for the annual Birmingham Hamfest sponsored by the Birmingham Amateur Radio Club. It happens at the Zamora Temple from 9 to 4 today and again Sunday.
