The rain deficiency for Birmingham for 2007 this morning is up to 12.68″, and I am afraid it goes over 13 inches by early next week.
TODAY: Much like yesterday, the best chance of afternoon showers and storms will come over the northern quarter of Alabama, but a few isolated ones could form as far south as I-20. Otherwise, the day will be very warm, with afternoon temperatures peaking in the 87 to 91 degree range.
THE WEEKEND: We still believe the best coverage of showers and storms will come tomorrow afternoon, as the old upper low that has been over Texas will be a little closer, and a surface front will approach from the north. But, we stress that the showers will be scattered. The NAM is printing only 0.35″ for Birmingham, while the GFS is a little more aggressive with 0.46″. Then, much drier air moves in here from the north on Sunday and any showers should be confined to South Alabama. Highs over the weekend will remain in the mid 80s.
NEXT WEEK: Monday should be pleasant with lower humidity and a cooler morning (we should be in the 50s early Monday). Our next chance of rain will come on Wednesday, with a significant cold front. Hopefully some neighborhoods will see a little over one-half inch of rain with that feature. Then, dry air returns for Thursday and Friday.
LONG RANGE: Not much sign of a big rain event in during the May 17-25 time frame with the main storm track well to the north. Best hope will be a few days with scattered afternoon showers and storms.
