Birmingham was reporting 86 degrees at 2:00, while the temperature soared to 88 at Montgomery, Anniston, Alex City, and Auburn. Nothing on the radar, and we have only a few fair weather cumulus clouds in the sky. The weather will remain warm and dry tomorrow with similar afternoon highs, but dewpoints will be creeping up during the day.
THURSDAY/FRIDAY: We will bring the risk of widely scattered afternoon showers on Thursday, but for now it looks like the best chance of those could be north of Birmingham. Then, on Friday, as the moisture deepens and a weakening cold front approaches from the north, there should be a general increase in the number of scattered showers and storms. Even then this won’t be a wash-out, and rainfall distribution will be very uneven. Temperatures will trend down slightly during the latter half of the week.
THE WEEKEND: A nice pool of moist air will cover Alabama over the weekend, but there is little in the way of atmospheric forcing and upward motion. So, we will continue the chance of scattered, mainly afternoon and evening showers and storms on Saturday and Sunday. The GFS continues to hint at a wedge of cooler air slipping into the state from the east, which could knock highs back down into the 70s over the weekend.
LONG RANGE: Once again, the 12Z GFS shows no major change through mid-month. The primary storm track over North America will remain well to the north of here, and the best chance of rain will come from the chance of scattered showers and storms during the afternoon hours, much like what we experience here in mid-Summer.

This has been quite a busy day… I enjoyed being with the huge crowd at the annual Mayor’s City of Hoover Prayer Breakfast at the Wynfrey this morning, and this afternoon I shared the science of meteorology with the 7th graders at Bessemer Academy.
