Well, after four days of record heat with daily high temperature records either tied or broken, there isn’t a lot to say except that it is just plain HOT!!
Unfortunately, the overall weather pattern remains mostly unchanged for the next five days or so. Only then will there be some slight changes which may allow slightly more coverage to afternoon showers and thunderstorms.
As we’ve been saying for nearly a week now, the upper ridge meanders slightly but manages to maintain a strangle hold on the pattern over the eastern half of the country. This hold deflects the main storm track well to our north keeping hot and hazy conditions across Central Alabama. We did see some isolated showers across South Alabama yesterday, and while that is the primary location for showers today we can’t rule out an isolated storm at any location – with this same scenario holding through at least Wednesday.
With the upper ridge we’ll continue to see afternoon highs in the upper 90s and morning lows in the lower 70s. The highs are a good 10 to 12 degrees higher than we usually see in early June.
Thunderstorms that do develop could become marginally severe especially across South Alabama with damaging downburst wind the most likely occurrence.
In the Wednesday to Saturday time period, some small weaknesses show up in the ridge which could help to enhance our afternoon shower chances. This doesn’t mean that everyone will get rain, but certainly improves our chances. At the same time, clouds and showers will likely play a role in lowering the afternoon highs just slightly – at least into the mid 90s and perhaps a tad lower for some spots.
Tropics are not particularly active, however, the large area of cloudiness over the Caribbean shows some signs of development as conditions have become slightly more favorable. Still no named storm to contend with, but an area to be watched for certain. This area is not expected to move much
