Thanks to Leah Dailey, 33/40 intern, for helping gather data and entering the information on the blog. On a day like this, we need all the information we can get.
At 11:00 a.m., here is a quick progress report.
Radar shows that locally heavy rain has now spread as far east across Alabama as Guntersville, Oneonta, East Jefferson County, East Shelby and down into South-Central Alabama. Some of the strongest thunderstorms were south of Montgomery and south and SW of Selma into Northern Clarke County. Everything is moving east.
The Storm Prediction Center is thinking about issuing a Severe Thunderstorm Watch for a part of Mississippi and extreme East Louisiana. Much of Central and South Alabama is also under a Slight Risk outlook for today.
Leah will be adding some rainfall reports as she gets them, but here are a few late reports:
* Brian Peters reports 0.40 in Helena.
* In Jemison, heavy rain is reported coming down at the rate of 1.50 inches an hour, although they have not received that much so far. In fact, only 0.11.
* Skywatcher Randle, reports 0.30 so far in Trussville.
* Thunderstorm with moderate to heavy rain in progress at my place in NE Trussville.
* 0.31 in Centreville as of 10:30.
* Chief Vaughan, skywatcher in Cuba in West Alabama, reports only 0.05 as of 10 o’clock. Most of the heavier rain seemed to be north of him.
This is our best rain situation in a long time unfolding across the state. In areas where there are forest fires, the rain will be a great help.
The NWS in Huntsville has issued a Significant Weather Alert for Limestone and Morgan Counties until 11:30 a.m.
