The atmosphere should be a little less stormy today with the main push of storms through the area yesterday afternoon. And what about those rainfall reports from Demopolis and Cuba? Wow, some tremendous rains. And I made it six straight days with measurable rain at my house – that’s surely something I have not seen in well over a year. Total rain for the six days stands at 2.87″ and my yard is very happy. But I don’t think I’ll make a seventh straight day!
The weak front is very hard to find but I think the atmosphere will be a bit drier across Central Alabama today. This means the greater risk of any showers is south of Birmingham. The drier air also means temperatures are likely to climb back up close to 90 once again. But hang on, we might see some highs in the lower and mid 80s later this week.
In the meantime, the SPC has outlooked a huge area for a moderate risk of severe storms today across the Central Plains into northern Ohio. The main threat will be damaging wind and large hail but isolated tornadoes will also be possible.
During the upcoming week, a trough will be established and strengthened over the eastern half of the country. The trough axis will be slightly east of us but there will be several short waves traveling through the trough that may bring enhanced shower chances to the area. As I noted yesterday, northwesterly flow can be an issue with large clusters of storms that travel hundreds of miles. The GFS does not specifically indicate that that will happen, however, when it is something to be watchful for when we have that flow pattern.
The ridge to the west begins to build back into the Southeast next weekend, so it looks like we should return to a summer-like pattern by then.
Looking further afield, the GFS is suggesting another eastern US trough toward the end of June, so there is no sign of any extreme heat through the end of the month.
I’ll be providing weather support to City Stages again today, and it looks like music fans will have a warm and dry day to enjoy all of the various acts for the festival. Hope you get a chance to take in some of the music.
Have a great Sunday and enjoy the upcoming week. I am especially looking forward to heading to higher ground with a camping trip to Mt. Cheaha. God bless.
