NEW FORMAT: We still have some work to do on the new blog format to take in your suggestions… but the response so far has been very, very positive. Thanks to Bill Murray for his hard work on making this happen. We will add the Weather Toolbox a little later this morning and a few other features. Remember, the Weather Xtreme video will always reside in the right sidebar near the top, and not in the individual posts any more.
SOME MID-WEEK RAIN: A deep upper low is forming over the Upper Texas coastal plain this morning, and will bring soaking rains to much of Louisiana and Mississippi during the next 36 hours. Here in our state, the rain will be much lighter. The latest run of the NAM is printing only 0.08″ of rain at Birmingham, with the GFS at 0.48″. The better rain amounts will be over West Alabama, where some spots could see 1/2 to 3/4″, and over in East Alabama some communities might not have enough rain to measure.
Daytime temperatures will be trending cooler thanks to the clouds; the high today will be in the upper 60s, and some spots might have a hard time getting out of the 50s tomorrow. Showers will end early Thursday as a deep upper trough forms over the eastern third of the nation.
THURSDAY/FRIDAY: The sky becomes partly sunny Thursday… then on Friday we will see the coldest air so far this season blowing in here on north winds averaging 15 to 25 mph. We are projecting a high only in the low 50s Friday, and that north wind will make it feel colder.
WEEKEND FREEZE: We are still projecting the first widespread freeze of the season early Saturday with lows in the 27 to 32 degree range. Sunday morning could very well be just as cold with a clear sky and light wind. The weekend will feature maximum sunshine on both days with a high in the 50s Saturday, followed by low to mid 60s Sunday.
NEXT WEEK AND BEYOND: The GFS shows a cold front passing through Alabama November 11 with a chance of showers, but nothing especially heavy. We do note the 00Z GFS brings a very robust trough through in the November 15-17 time frame that could suggest a chance of strong to severe storms, followed by much colder air. This, of course, is all out there in the land of voodoo… watch the Weather Xtreme video for more details.
TROPICS: Tomas is expected to become a minimal hurricane later this week, with a turn toward Haiti late Friday or Friday night. From there, it moves to the northeast over the open Atlantic, and is no threat to land. See the Weather Xtreme video for all the graphics.
WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 30 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40. Scroll down for the show notes on this week’s new episode.
