The upper trough which has brought some refreshingly cool weather to the eastern half of the country including Central Alabama has created a little mischief this morning. We have a substantial cloud cover across the northern half of the state associated with a weak disturbance moving through the base of the upper trough. Radar showed some showers generally along and north of the Interstate 20 corridor, however, a quick peek at the upper air sounding from last night showed the atmosphere to be fairly dry. In fact, it is very hard to find any reporting station with measurable precipitation this morning. But if you are headed out for the morning, I would prepare for the possibility of some sprinkles or light rain with Skywatchers reporting a tenth of an inch of rain or less so far.

This first disturbance will move through opening the way for a mix of clouds and sunshine for the afternoon. We should be a bit warmer than yesterday with highs climbing into the middle 70s across the area.

Today’s pattern will repeat on Sunday morning but I think there is a better chance we’ll see some measurable rain across the northern half of Alabama along with the potential for some thunder. There does not appear to be any indication that we’ll see any severe weather. Temperatures will hold similar to today with highs in the lower and middle 70s with clouds and more widespread rain potential.

The upper trough weakens and moves eastward Sunday as our cool trough pattern is replaced by a strong upper ridge which will become planted for several days over the Southeast US. The upper high will bring a return of warm weather – I might even call it hot – with afternoon highs moving into the upper 80s with some spots flirting with the 90-degree mark by Thursday and Friday and into Saturday. Humidity levels will come up somewhat by next weekend giving us a chance for some afternoon, heat driven showers but coverage is not expected to be very great.

The upper ridge breaks down around Tuesday, May 27th, providing us with the next substantial chance for rain. But that trough moves by fairly quickly as the upper ridge builds into the Central US once again to bring a warm and mainly dry pattern back for the end of May.
