I have a reputation, good or bad, of being an outright coward when:

* Lightning approaches
* Road rage develops near me (I jump the ditch and head for the hills)
* Alligators (any size)
* All snakes four inches or longer

This is another scary lightning story sent to us by James Payton, the ABC 33/40 SkyWatcher in Huntsville.

It happened at Warner Robbins, Ga., south of Macon, last Thursday evening. This is James Payton’s hometown and it happened at the Warner Robbins Middle School where he used to attend. So, let us get to the story.

A storm was approaching and the coaches were trying to get the players off the field. It was too late. At about 6:15, a bolt of lightning struck both coaches, the referee, and injured seven others. Actually, the final injury total, at the 8th grade football game, reached 13. The AD at Warner Robbins Middle School was in critical condition and admitted to a burn center at Augusta.

Witnesses say that the big bolt of lightning actually lifted people off the ground. Naturally, pandemonium set in and persons were screaming and running toward the gym.

Seven children and adults were treated at local hospitals.

This information was as of last Friday. We hope and pray that all the injured have improved considerably–or, better yet, considerably.

Yes, it is true, “Lightning is frightening”

…and we don’t have to say extremely dangerous.
