It is mild and wet across Central Alabama this morning as temperatures have continued to rise since yesterday afternoon. Most spots across Central Alabama were around the 50-degree mark. Quite a change from the freezing values of early Saturday morning.
A weak surface low was moving along the Gulf Coast in the vicinity of Mobile this morning. While the rain was ending from west to east across Central Alabama, clouds are likely to remain. And with the southwesterly flow aloft, any minor disturbances in that flow can generate some patchy rain over the next 24 to 36 hours before the next system begins to affect us primarily on Tuesday.
Rainfall amounts across Central Alabama were a bit lighter than I expected with most locations getting between one quarter and one half inch. Heavier amounts, on the order of 5 to 8 inches, fell according to radar estimates across South Alabama.
Tuesday will be another wet day for Central Alabama as the next vigorous short wave brings another round of moisture to the area thanks to another weak low in the Northwest Gulf of Mexico. The northern stream moves quickly while the short wave trough in the southern stream dives into the Gulf opening us up to dryer weather from Wednesday through the end of the weekend.
A developing deep trough over the eastern half of the country should open the refrigerator door to some much colder weather beginning as early as Saturday and extending into the start of the next week. At the moment, all indications point to dry weather, so there is no winter weather threat for us according to the latest model run.
No organized severe weather today across the US. Some storms are possible Monday in Southeast Texas but these appear likely to remain below severe limits.
Looking into the voodoo crystal ball, Christmas is looking dry for Central Alabama. However, another vigorous storm system the day after Christmas could bring a significant winter storm to the Central US which could play havoc with travel for those that might be traveling on the 26th and 27th.
