SNOW OR NO SNOW? We continue to watch with interest the impulse coming through the base of the upper trough to the west of Alabama. In advance of that, we expect another mostly cloudy and cold day with temperatures not getting out of the 40s.

No doubt the trend in the NWP world (numerical weather prediction) is toward a drier solution for North/Central Alabama tomorrow morning, and radar trends tend to confirm this as the radar echoes we saw last night over Texas and Arkansas have really faded. The NWS in Jackson has downgraded their winter storm watch for the southern part of Mississippi to a winter weather advisory, and I am not even sure that is needed. There are no winter weather advisories for Alabama, and most likely none will be needed.

For now it looks like nothing more than snow flurries for the central part of Alabama Saturday morning, with no snow at all for the northwest third of the state. The NAM continues the idea of a dusting to one inch of snow, but for places like Selma, Montgomery, and Auburn, along U.S. 80. But, that model is now the outlier. The RPM and the GFS snow no snow accumulation, and based on the dry atmosphere and radar trends, they seem to be on the right idea.

The main window for flurries is from about 2:00 a.m. until 10:00 a.m. No travel issues, but the day will be cold with a high only in the low to mid 40s. The sky becomes partly sunny tomorrow afternoon, and Sunday will be a mostly sunny day with afternoon temperatures reaching the low 50s.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: FOOTBALL WEATHER: Bundle up for today and tonight’s Super 6 high school championship games at Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa. Temperatures this afternoon will be in the 45 to 49 degree range, dropping into the low 40s tonight for the Hoover-Prattville 6A game. The sky will be mostly cloudy, but no precipitation is expected. We guarantee dry weather for tomorrow’s SEC championship game between Alabama and Florida since they are in Atlanta’s Georgia Dome, but outside the day will be cold with snow flurries possible. No travel issues in Atlanta due to weather.

NEXT WEEK: A few periods of rain are likely Monday and Tuesday as moist air returns… the heaviest rain seems to be setting up for Tuesday night, and possibly early Wednesday as short wave passes just north of the state. For now it looks like there won’t be sufficient instability for a severe weather problem. Colder and drier air then sets in Wednesday afternoon through Thursday.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 30 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40. You can even listen here on the blog; look for the player on the top left.

We will keep an eye on things today and let you know if anything changes; the next Weather Xtreme video will be posted by 3:30 or so this afternoon.
