THIS AFTERNOON: Generally speaking, showers and storms have thinned out a bit across our state, but still we have some communities with heavy rain and lots of lightning. Some of the heaviest rain is around Lake Martin and Alex City as I write this around 2:00. Other showers and storms will form through the rest of the afternoon and evening hours.
REST OF THE WEEK: The upper low that bothered us in recent days is lifting out to the northeast as a short wave, but a very moist airmass will stay in place through mid-week. This means we will to dodge showers and storms on a daily basis through the rest of the week. The most numerous showers and storms will come during the afternoon and evening hours, but a late night or morning shower can’t be completely ruled out. Afternoon highs will be mostly in the mid to upper 80s, with some spots touching 90 degrees Friday.
THE WEEKEND: The models continue to suggest our weather will be drier Saturday and Sunday, with hotter afternoons. Keep in mind this is summer (at least meteorological summer), so it will be hard to rule out an afternoon shower somewhere through August, but a building ridge aloft suggests a pretty decent amount of sun over the weekend with highs in the 90 to 94 degree range.
LONG RANGE: Nothing really unusual shows up through mid-June; the core of the mid-latitude westerlies remains just north of the state, leaving us in a warm, moist environment with some risk of scattered, mostly afternoon showers and storms on just about a daily basis. Temperatures will be close to average values for early June in Alabama.
WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 30 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes.
