BIG STORMS TO THE NORTH: The NWS Huntsville maintains a number of severe thunderstorm warnings for a number of their counties up in the Tennessee Valley this afternoon; the stronger storms were in an arc from Athens to Eva to Cullman as I write this around 3:00. The storms are capable of producing strong gusty winds, very frequent and vivid lightning, and heavy rain, possibly enough for local flash flooding issues.
Those storms are moving to the east/southeast, but other storms could form down this way during the next few hours.
TOMORROW: A surface front (note we never call them “cold fronts” in August) will actually approach, and should set up a pretty decent coverage of showers and storms during the day. Some communities could see a heavy downpour or two, and a strong storm is certainly likely in spots; SPC maintains their standard “slight risk” of severe weather for about the northern half of Alabama tomorrow, with the main threat coming from wet microbursts. Some spots should fail to reach 90 due to the clouds, showers, and thunderstorms.
WEDNESDAY-FRIDAY: Drier air actually moves into Alabama tomorrow night, and dew points are expected to drop to near 60 degrees by Wednesday afternoon, which will mean a noticeable drop in humidity values. Still, afternoons will remain hot with highs in the low to mid 90s. But, nights will be a little cooler, and some parts of Northeast Alabama could see lows in the 60s by Wednesday and Thursday morning.
And, while you can never really rule out the risk of a shower on a summer afternoon in Alabama, most places should be rain-free on these three days thanks to the dry air. The chance of any one spot getting wet is only about one in ten.
WEEKEND PREVIEW: Moist air moves back into the state Saturday and Sunday, and we will accordingly bring back the risk of scattered showers and storms both days. For now it looks like the best coverage of rain will come on Sunday as another August front approaches from the north.
The GFS continues the idea of drier air moving into North Alabama early next week, with a good supply of sunshine Monday and Tuesday with lower humidity levels and slightly cooler nights. See the Weather Xtreme video for more long range ideas.
TROPICS: Dry air continues to cover much of the Atlantic basin, and tropical storm formation is not expected through the week.
AT THE BEACH: Pretty routine summer weather continues along the Gulf Coast through Friday with about 6-8 hours of sunshine each day along with the chance of scattered showers and storms. Highs will be close to 90, and the sea water temperature this afternoon at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab is 88 degrees.
