Thanks to a weak convergence zone or front, Central Alabama should see numerous showers today as we saw across the Tennessee Valley yesterday. Not everyone will get rain since it will be in the form of showers, but it looks good for a pretty good chunk of the area to get some rain.
The Storm Total Precipitation image from the WSR-88D at the Shelby County Airport showed that Franklin and Marion counties could have seen over 3 inches of rain in those storms late yesterday. The area covered by that much rain was rather small but that would certainly have been a soaker. Reports from skywatchers yesterday indicated that those storms certainly were accompanied by a great deal of lightning.
That convergence zone should sink a bit further south today bringing the best chances for rain into Central Alabama where almost no showers occurred yesterday. I think we’ll see the temperatures climb into the lower 90s before the showers kick off. Once the showers begin, temperatures could fall back into the 70s with the cooler air and rain in any spots where showers occur.
That focus for showers should continue to sink southward tomorrow. I expect showers will be more numerous tomorrow from Birmingham southward. And by Tuesday and on into the middle of the week, slightly drier air should keep us shower free. This will allow temperatures to climb a tad reaching the mid 90s – with some spots getting into the upper 90s.
Some moisture return by the end of the week brings showers back into the forecast. The GFS does not seem to be as bullish on that today as it was yesterday.
And perusing the longer range offerings, there is still no sign of any extreme heat – cheers go up!! And the GFS is maintaining that east coast troughiness, so we stay in a pattern favorable for afternoon showers. In fact, the GFS is suggesting another front or convergence zone around August 9th.
I invite you to watch ABC 3340 today at 5 and 10 pm for the latest news and weather. James Spann will be on vacation this week, so I’ll be posting the Weather Xtreme Videos by 8 am or slightly after. There will be only one each day unless I see anything develop that might warrant an afternoon update. I hope that you have a great Sunday and God bless.
