SUN AND STORMS: The storms that prompted a flash flood warning for the City of Birmingham and Jefferson County have diminished; the Birmingham Airport measured nearly two inches of rain earlier this afternoon. Heavier storms at mid-afternoon were over Limestone County near Athens, and down south near Montgomery. Other heavy storms were over East Alabama’s Clay, Randolph, and Cleburne Counties. Very little movement in these storms, meaning they are dropping lots of rain in a short amount of time.

Away from the storms, there is a mix of sun and clouds with temperatures generally in the 87 to 90 degree range, although Tuscaloosa did rise to 92. We will maintain the risk of showers and storms in scattered spots tonight.

TOMORROW AND THE WEEKEND: The setup is simply not changing much. A blanket of very moist air (precipitable water values over 2 inches) will stick around, and each day we will have to dodge occasional showers and storms. While the best chance of them will come during the afternoon and evening hours, we can’t rule out the risk of a late night or morning thunderstorm. Otherwise, a mixture of sun and clouds all three days with the afternoon high not too far from 90 degrees.

The moist air sticks around next week; we do note much drier and cooler north of Alabama, but for now it looks like it won’t have enough southward push to reach us. See the Weather Xtreme video for the maps, graphics, and more details.

GULF COAST WEATHER: Warmer air aloft near the coast means a good 6 to 8 hours of sunshine daily through early next week with only widely scattered storms each day. Highs around 90 on the immediate coast, and the sea water temperature this afternoon at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab is up to 90 degrees… as warm as we have seen it all summer.

TROPICS: The Atlantic basin remains quiet, and tropical storm formation is not expected through the weekend.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40.
