ANOTHER DRY DAY: Cooler spots across Alabama are in the 50s this morning with a dry airmass in place… expect a mostly sunny sky today with a high in the 80s. A few isolated showers could pop up this afternoon over the southwest corner of the state, but most places will stay rain-free.

THE WEEKEND: We will bring in a chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms for Southwest Alabama tomorrow, but the rest of the state stays dry with a partly to mostly sunny sky. Then, scattered showers/storms are possible statewide Sunday as moisture levels continue to rise. Highest coverage of showers Sunday will be over the western 2/3 of the state; highs will hold in the 80s over the weekend.

NEXT WEEK: Monday and Tuesday will be warm and humid with scattered showers and storms around, mainly during the afternoon and evening hours. Then, showers will thin out over the latter half of the week as an upper ridge begins to rebuild across the region. Many places will reach 90 degrees by Thursday and Friday thanks to the ridge and the lack of showers. See the video briefing for maps, graphics, and more details.

TROPICS: Tropical storm formation is not expected across the Atlantic basin for the next seven days. Global models continue to hint at some potential for a tropical system over the Gulf in 10-15 days, but understand there no skill at forecasting the placement and intensity of a tropical cyclone more than seven days in advance. Using output from the European ensemble, the probably of tropical storm formation in mid-June in the Gulf is currently 20-30 percent. Keep in mind most early season tropical systems that form in the Gulf are mainly rain-makers, not dangerous hurricanes.

ON THIS DATE IN 1944: On June 5, 1944, severe, storm-driven weather swept across the English Channel, featuring heavy winds of 25 to 30 mph, rough seas, and low cloud cover. These hostile conditions forced General Dwight D. Eisenhower to postpone the D-Day invasion for one day. The decision to postpone was a difficult one, as any delay made it increasingly difficult to keep the operation a secret.

Look for the next video briefing here by 3:00 this afternoon… enjoy the day!
