WARMER AFTERNOONS AHEAD: Today is going to be our 8th consecutive day with temperatures below 90 degrees in Birmingham; we are only at 80 degrees at 2:00, so needless to say, the streak continues. Tomorrow we will be very close to 90, and low 90s are likely Saturday afternoon as the warming trend continues.
Radar shows a few showers this afternoon well to the southeast, over Chambers and Tallapoosa counties, ahead of the surface front that continues moving southeast. Most of North and Central Alabama will remain dry through Saturday with a few fair weather cumulus clouds dotting the southern sky.
SUNDAY AND INTO NEXT WEEK: Another surface front will approach Alabama Sunday as the mean upper trough over the eastern U.S. sharpens up again; we figure a few scattered showers and storms will show up Sunday afternoon. The front will hang up around the northwest corner of the state, keeping us in a moist airmass for most of next week with the daily chance of scattered showers and storms, possibly numerous at times. Looks like highs next week will be generally in the 86 to 90 degree range.
TROPICS: A gale center (a non-tropical low) is forming off the coast of North Carolina this afternoon; that will bring some rain and gusty winds to the upper Atlantic coast, but tropical storm formation is not expected across the Atlantic basin through the weekend.
AT THE BEACH: There will be some scattered showers and thunderstorms each day all the way through the weekend for the Alabama/NW Florida beaches. Not an all-day rain. High temperatures will vary between 88 and 92. Pretty routine summer weather.
LONG RANGE: Still no sign of the upper air pattern changing, with ridging over the western half of the nation, and an upper trough over the east. This should mean rainfall above average, and temperatures below average for Alabama through mid-August. Sure sounds good to me.
