THIS MORNING: Rain is falling this morning in a few pockets over Alabama; at 5:30 heavier showers were over Pickens and Fayette Counties of West Alabama, with the most widespread rain to the north over Lawrence, Morgan, Lauderdale, and Limestone Counties. Sure feels good with temperatures in the 55 to 63 degree range.
REST OF THE DAY: A very deep upper trough will move over Alabama today. The cold air aloft associated with the trough will mean the air is very unstable, so showers are possible during the day with a high in the mid 70s. We might even hear of some small hail in the heavier showers today due to the cold air up top.
REST OF THE WEEK: Showers end this evening as the upper trough moves to the east, and some delightful early fall weather is the story tomorrow through Friday with sunny pleasant days and clear cool nights. Most places will be in the low 50s early tomorrow and Wednesday morning, but no doubt the cooler spots will reach the 40s. Afternoon highs will be in the upper 70s tomorrow, with low 80s Wednesday through Friday. The humidity will be very low.
WEEKEND PEEK: A fresh surge of cool, dry air sets in here for the weekend. Highs in the 70s, lows in the 50s (with 40s for the cooler valleys) Saturday and Sunday with lots of sunshine both days as the air stays very dry.
LONG RANGE: The weather looks dry through mid-October. Keep in mind October is the driest month of the year, so that is not unusual. No sign of any tropical weather issues here, which makes us wonder if the Central Gulf Coast will dodge the hurricane bullet this year.
TROPICS: Matthew dissipated over the weekend over Mexico, but a new disturbance over the Northwest Caribbean could become Tropical Storm Nicole in coming days. This will move over the southern tip of Florida, and head northeast, parallel to the East Coast of the U.S. No impact of Alabama at all with a mean upper trough in place over the eastern third of the nation.
