90+ STREAK UPDATE: Looks like Tuscaloosa has probably ended their streak of 90 degree plus days; the high reported so far has been 89, and they are down to 83 with nearby showers and clouds. However, Birmingham has touched 90 degrees, so this will be the 46th consecutive day with a high of 90 or higher, a record which continues to grow. Anniston ended their streak of 90 degree days this past Saturday when the high was 88.

RADAR CHECK: Some of the heaviest rain at 3:00 was over Bibb, Perry, and Chilton Counties of Central Alabama. These showers are moving slowly northeast, and could impact the Birmingham metro area a little later this afternoon. Other good tropical showers are over Etowah, Cherokee, Marshall, and DeKalb Counties of Northeast Alabama, and Lamar and Fayette Counties of West Alabama. A shower or storm could form at any place during the rest of the afternoon and evening with a pure tropical airmass over Alabama, and some spots could see heavy amounts of rain.

TOMORROW THROUGH SUNDAY: The weather won’t change much over the weekend. The moist environment continues, and each day will feature scattered to numerous showers and storms. Small scale features will determine the placement and coverage of the rain, but there is little model agreement in the mesoscale. The NAM is most bullish on rain tomorrow, while the GFS shows the best coverage on Saturday. Not much skill in trying to be too specific here… so we will just roll with the chance of showers and storms on a daily basis through Sunday with highs in the 89 to 93 degree range. While the best chance of a shower or storm will come during the afternoon and evening hours, we can’t rule out a late night or morning shower in spots due to the tropical nature of the air over the state.

NEXT WEEK: The idea of drier air arriving over North Alabama early in the week seems to be off the table now, so we will roll with your standard August forecast Monday through Wednesday of next week with highs in the low to mid 90s, along with partly sunny days and some risk of afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms.

TROPICS: A tropical wave over the western Caribbean should move into Central America tomorrow with no sign of organization. Our wave in the far eastern Atlantic looks rather disorganized now, but there could be some slow development in coming days during the long journey “across the pond”. We note the GFS continues to show a well developed tropical storm or hurricane well east of the U.S. East Coast in about 8 days… see the Weather Xtreme video for more.
