NO DRY AIR ANYTIME SOON: Showers will be part of our forecast for the next seven days, so keep the rain gear handy. The most widespread rain, potentially heavy at times, will come during the first half of next week.

TODAY AND THE WEEKEND: Rain is still falling this morning over parts of Northwest and East-Central Alabama, and it sure looks like showers are a good bet statewide today. It don’t rain all day, but it could rain at any time, and clouds and showers will keep daytime temperatures in the 70s much of the day.

The GFS and the NAM at times have tried to suggest a drier day tomorrow as deeper moisture pulls in closer to a tropical type low over Southeast Texas, but we will keep a chance of scattered showers and storms in the forecast. The sun will be out at times tomorrow with a high in the mid 80s.

And, on Sunday, we will continue to hit the chance of showers a little harder as the tropical low moves closer, but the most recent runs of the GFS have been a little slower, and it could very well be Sunday night or Monday before the most widespread rain arrives. We will review the 12Z model runs and adjust things later today as needed.

NEXT WEEK: Wet is the word, as the broad surface low stalls out and just hangs around much of the week. Looks like a week of occasional showers and thunderstorms, with daytime temperatures below average due to the rain. The rain could very well be heavy at times, and I would not be surprised to see some 2 to 4 inch totals between Sunday and Friday of next week.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: For tonight’s high school games, there is about a one in four chance of any one specific stadium having a shower or thunderstorm, and they will be most likely during the first half of the games. Temperatures will hover in the mid to upper 70s with a cloudy sky. Tomorrow, Alabama will host Florida International, and Auburn hosts Mississippi State. Both of these games feature 6:00 p.m. kickoffs, and the weather will be very similar at both Jordan-Hare Stadium, and Bryant-Denny Stadium. The sky will be mostly cloudy with a passing shower or thunderstorm possible. Temperatures will drop from near 80 degrees at kickoff to the mid 70s by the fourth quarter. And, UAB will host SMU at Birmingham’s Legion Field tomorrow at 3:00; the weather will be partly sunny and warm with a shower or thunderstorm possible. Temperatures will fall the low 80s at kickoff to the upper 70s by the final whistle.

TROPICS: I get the idea Fred might be out there at Christmas. The system is now a minimal hurricane around 35W; it should weaken into a remnant low by Sunday. Interesting to note the guys at NHC begin to move the low back to the west next week as an upper ridge rebuilds north of the system. Will Fred make a comeback and threaten the East Coast of the U.S.? I would say it is unlikely since all top ten analogs recurve into the open Atlantic. But, with tropical systems expected the unexpected. We will be watching.
