STILL HOT TODAY: Don’t look for much change in our weather today; hot and steamy with highs in the 95 to 99 degree range. A few showers or storms could show up this afternoon or tonight, but they should be widely scattered, with most of them over the southern half of the state.
BETTER RAIN CHANCES AHEAD: Still no real change in our thinking. Despite the demise of tropical depression five, a broad tropical low will move inland today with copious amounts of moisture pulled northward into Alabama. This will mean a much better chance of showers and storms on a daily basis tomorrow through the weekend, with highs dropping back into the low 90s. The GFS prints 99 today, 93 tomorrow, and a high of only 90 on Saturday.
Understand the rain won’t be continuous over the weekend, and the sun will be out at times. But, a tropical shower is possible at almost anytime, and some heavy rain is very possible in spots due to the tropical nature of the air that will be in place. Three day rain amounts should average 1 to 2 inches tomorrow through Sunday.
NEXT WEEK: Watch the Weather Xtreme video and you will see the GFS is trying to move the old tropical low back into the far northern Gulf early in the week, with redevelopment. This will certainly keep the chance of rain relatively high through at least the first half of next week as the moisture flow will continue unabated. Sure looks like the worst of the summer heat is behind us, thank goodness.
ELSEWHERE IN THE TROPICS: NHC has identified a number of suspect areas across the Atlantic basin, but they all have a low chance of development due to unfavorable atmospheric conditions. See the Weather Xtreme video for more.
PERSEID METEOR SHOWER: The annual Perseid meteor shower is underway. Earth is passing through a wide stream of debris from Comet Swift-Tuttle, and each time a fleck of comet dust hits Earth’s atmosphere–flash!–there is a meteor. Forecasters say the shower will peak on Thursday, August 12th, and Friday, August 13th. You can see Perseids flitting across the sky at any time between about 10 pm on Thursday evening and sunrise on Friday morning. Observers who get away from city lights can expect to count dozens of meteors per hour, especially during the dark hours before dawn.
Tune into https://spaceweather.com for full coverage of the shower, including a live meteor radar, a “fireball cam,” updated meteor counts and pictures from around the world.
