Showers continue to develop over Northwest and Northeast Alabama this afternoon.
Over the Northwest section of the state, a nice field of puffy cumulus clouds formed by late morning. Some of those cumulus clouds have grown into showers. Still no lightning yet, but the activity should continue to grow in intensity. The activity just east of Vernon in Lamar County was showing promise as the first thunderstorm of the afternoon. This activity is moving south and south southeast. Tusacaloosa may get wet from this activity.
A couple of showers are over the Northwest corner of the state in Lauderdale and Colbert Counties. They are also moving generally southward.
In Northeast Alabama, few growing showers were over Jackson County, also heading south.
Elsewhere across the state, skies were generally sunny, except for a few cumulus clouds and some spreading cirrostratus clouds over East Central Alabama. I am not sure what is going on with those clouds, but they could set up aome differential heating boundaries around the periphery, perhaps over parts of Shelby, Talladega or Coosa Counties. Just guessing there…
One o’clock readings included 88F at Gadsden, 85F at Birmingham, 87F at Tuscaloosa and 86F at Calera.
Hope your backyard gets some rain this afternoon…unless you are attending one of the outdoor events across the area, like the Buck Creek Festival in Helena. Wet Willie (remember that great band from the 70s?) takes the stage there at 8 p.m. tonight. Hopefully, they won’t be “Smiling Through the Rain” as they sang in their hit song “Keep on Smilin.'”)
