It looks like another perfect Fall day is ahead for Central Alabama – in fact, for much of the eastern half of the country. But it started chilly with our coldest morning so far this Fall season. Most airport locations were reporting readings in the lower 40s as forecast, but I’m sure some of those colder valley locations dipped into the upper 30s. Fort Payne was the coldest hourly reporting site I could find in Alabama with 36 degrees. Brrrr – but refreshing!
The trough was migrated east and is now in the Atlantic Ocean. We’re under northwesterly flow and will be for the next couple of days. With sunshine we should see several more days of cool mornings and mild afternoons with lows starting out generally in the 40s and highs getting into the lower and mid 70s.
By mid-week we start to see some changes to the overall pattern as a large closed low drops into the Central US. This version of the GFS – 24 hours later than the one yesterday morning – is a little weaker with the closed low and keeps it a tad further north. So now it looks like our weather will be the wettest on Friday. We might see some rain chances across the western sections of Alabama late Thursday. By Saturday much of the weather is getting out of here with improving conditions.
But that closed low exits quickly as the GFS is now painting a new low dropping in behind the first one. And this one could be even colder with the 540 thickness line projected to reach Birmingham and Central Alabama by Monday the 27th. This could be the set up for a rather chilly Halloween, but this is also verging on voodoo land so we’ll watch later model runs and see how they handle this. But the trend seems good.
Further into voodoo country, the GFS is suggesting a moderation to the flow with a gradual shift of the westerlies back north and not such a high amplitude flow. A new storm system has appeared around November 2nd which could give us some wet and stormy weather.
