The EMA office in Talladega County reports large hail the size of quarters in Sylacauga.
The NWS has also issued a special weather statement for Shelby and St. Clair Counties until 4:15. This was based on a strong thunderstorm 7 miles NE of Sterrett. It was moving toward the SW at 15 mph.
Hail up to dime size is possible in this storm along with strong gusty winds.
This statement for Shelby County is short of an actual Severe Thunderstorm Warning.
Besides the strong storm over the NE corner of Shelby County and the one over south Talladega County, which is about to move into Coosa County, other widely scattered storms were developing over North and Central Alabama. They will all be moving toward the south and SW.
The NWS has also issued an Urban and Small Stream Flood Advisory for the Sylacauga/Childersburg area and South Talladega County. Flooding has been reported in the Sylacauga area. An additional 1 to 3 inches of rain is possible in that area as other thunderstorms move across.
An added note: 33/40 skywatcher in Verbena reports 1/3 inch of rain in 18 minutes–the most rain that location has had since April. That shows you how thirsty the Alabama countryside is for water.
