A few light showers are showing up across the southwestern quarter of Alabama this afternoon.
Radar at 2:10 p.m. shows activity showing up from Bibb and Hale Counties extensing southward into Southwest Alabama.
The heaviest shower was passing just east of Moundville.
Activity is moving to the NNE at nearly 50 mph. It may clip western Jefferson County, but should miss Downtown Birmingham.
Other activity was over the Tennessee Valley of North Alabama over Limestone County.
Additional showers were over eastern Mississippi. They will reach West Alabama’s Lamar, Pickens and Sumter Counties around 5 p.m.
CAPE values over 500 j/kg cover a large part of Mississippi, looping back over into SW Alabama. Still not impressive. Lapse rates (decrease in temperature with height = important for updraft development) are not good.
Still, we will be monitoring storms as they approach Alabama from the west later for the potential that they could be strong to severe.
Thunderstorms are lurking back over much of Louisiana and over western Tennessee. The Louisiana storms may be robbing moisture from the northern storms.
Back close to the surface low, tornado watches are in effect over the Midwest, including the entire state of Iowa and parts of adjacent states.
