Today is going to be another beautiful Fall day across the Southeast US, but there will be some busy times ahead as we see a couple of rain producing systems Monday and Wednesday followed by some much colder air. But for today, as the surface high over us marches steadily eastward, we should see a nice warm up with afternoon highs reaching the middle 60s. Cirrus clouds will fill the sky from time to time, but we should still see plenty of sunshine.

Sunday clouds will be on the increase while we remain fairly warm with highs again in the middle 60s. Some rain could reach Central Alabama during the overnight nights from Sunday into Monday, but right now, it appears Monday will be a cloudy, rainy, cool day as a cold front migrates across the area associated with a fast moving trough traveling across the northern tier of the US.

That trough zips by quickly and I think we should see some sun on Tuesday – maybe only briefly – as we come under a ridge. That ridge won’t be with us long as the closed low over northern Mexico heads our way with the development of a surface low in the northwestern Gulf of Mexico. This should bring another wet day for us on Wednesday.

The surface low moves northeast out of the area and a large trough develops over the eastern two-thirds of the country bringing some chilly air to the Southeast for Thursday and Friday. By Saturday, the big upper trough is exiting allowing for a warming trend before the next rain-producing system on Monday.

Rainfall amounts for the Monday and Wednesday rains will likely be in the 1 to 2 inch category – one half inch or so with the first rain Monday and 1 to 1.5 inches on Wednesday. Once again it appears likely that there will be greater rainfall amounts to our south with up to 5 inches possible along the Gulf coast region.

No severe weather forecast today. And as the 2009 hurricane season winds down through the last couple of days there are no disturbed areas being watched.

The GFS continues to show an active weather pattern into the first half of December. One rain producing system is possible around the 7th and another around the 13th. It sure looks like 2009 will come in as one of the wetter years in weather history for Central Alabama.
