THIS MORNING: Rain is moving out of Alabama at daybreak. Seems like rain totals were relatively light; a quick check on our Skywatcher chat reveals rain totals generally under a quarter of an inch overnight. We had a some thunder and lightning, but nothing really to get excited about. We should rise into the low 60s today with lingering clouds much of the day. You might see a peek or two of sunshine, but the day should be generally overcast.
MID-WEEK: We figure temperatures tomorrow will be about ten degrees cooler, with a high close to 50 degrees. The sky will remain generally cloudy, and to the west we will be watching a snow event over Texas with interest. Snow is likely in places like Waco and Austin, where they just aren’t used to winter weather events (much like us!).
That disturbance over Texas is expected to slide southeast, but it looks like we could have some light precipitation around here tomorrow night into early Wednesday morning. Based on a blend of model output, I think the best solution for now is to mention a chance of light rain tomorrow night, followed by some risk of snow flurries early Wednesday morning. Our high will drop into the 40s on Thursday and Friday as colder air continues to move into the state.
FRIDAY AND THE WEEKEND: Looks like another snow event is possible for East Texas on Friday, and that one will also head southeast, with the main impact passing south of here Saturday morning. For now we will leave precipitation out of the forecast over the weekend, with generally dry and cool conditions Saturday and Sunday. Looks like highs in the 50 to 55 degree range for now.
NEXT WEEK: The GFS continues the idea of a major Gulf low early next week, hinting at a big soaking for the southern two-thirds of the state by Monday night, with some potential for snow over the northwest counties of the state. Impossible to nail down details this far in advance; just be aware the idea is on the table.
PEEKING INTO MARCH: The southern stream remains very active, and a series of waves will bring rain to Alabama and the Deep South through the first half of March, mixed with occasional shots of cold air in the negative AO pattern. See the Weather Xtreme video for details.
WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 30 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40. You can even listen here on the blog; look for the player on the top left. Tonight’s show will be an interesting one as we talk about the effect of social media on television weather. Some big brain TV weather guys will join the show, including Brad Panovich from Charlotte, Nate Johnson from Raleigh and Morgan Palmer from Fort Myers. We will talk about the pros and cons, their favorite tools, advice to meteorologists getting started with social media and the future of it all. The new show will be posted by midnight CST.
LIVE CHAT: We are now offering a real time chat here on the blog… open blog comments will stay in place, of course, but this will allow a more immediate method of communication for weather geeks. We do have moderators posted over there, so be sure and play nice. Members of our weather team will be there from time to time to answer questions; we will post those times we are available here on the blog.
I will be speaking to a group of senior adults in Homewood late this morning… look for the next Weather Xtreme video here by 3:30 or so. Enjoy the day!
