SEVERE CLEAR: Hard to find a cloud in the Alabama sky this afternoon. With bright sunshine temperatures are generally in the low 60s across this part of the state with a gentle breeze. The weather will be cold again tonight with upper 30s by daybreak tomorrow for most places; the colder valleys could see another light freeze. Tomorrow looks wonderful with a sunny sky and a high in the mid 60s.
THE WEEKEND: Models continue to trend north with our Gulf storm, and it now looks like most of the state will see rain over the weekend. The rain will begin initially over Southwest Alabama early Saturday, spreading northward during the day. The 12Z GFS puts the surface low just north of Mobile Saturday night, with widespread rain over the northern half of the state. The rain will end Sunday, but it sure looks like we will need to carry the chance of rain at least through Sunday morning as the low won’t be moving fast. East Alabama could even see some rain into Sunday afternoon. Afternoon highs over the weekend will be in the 59 to 62 degree range.
FOOTBALL WEATHER: Looks great for the remaining high school play off games Friday night. It will be dry and cool with temperatures in the 50s for most of the games and maybe some upper 40s by the fourth quarter. No rain expected. For in state college games on Saturday, Chattanooga will be at Alabama at 11:21 and Eastern Kentucky at Jacksonville State at noon. We must introduce the possibility of some light rain, although much of those two games could be played dry. Elon is at Samford for a 2:00 p.m. kick off and Mississippi Valley State at Alabama A&M also at 2:00. Florida Atlantic will be at Troy for a 3:19 game. There is a chance of rain for those games and temperatures will be hovering close to 60.
THANKSGIVING WEEK: Model madness is creeping in… the GFS is coming in dry now for Tuesday with the short wave energy well to the north of Alabama; we will begin to phase out the chance of showers if the trend continues. And, the GFS is not as deep with the upper trough at the end of the week; meaning the coldest air will stay north of Alabama for Thanksgiving Day and Black Friday/Iron Bowl Friday. One way or another, these two days look rain-free. We will be much more confident in the forecast over the weekend.
VOODOO LAND: Confidence is growing that much of the U.S. will turn sharply colder about the time December arrives. How cold, and how far south is up for debate of course, but the bitterly cold air over Alaska can’t be ignored.
