The NWS is slowly phasing out the old DIFAX charts that we used to receive on wet paper facsimile machines and later on dot matrix printers. Computers generate almost any chart we need today on demand. But sometimes I can’t resist looking back at one of the legacy products. Here is the Max Temperature chart for yesterday. Please note that you can always click to enlarge the images on AlabamaWX.com.

In case you hadn’t noticed, it’s hot.

Here are Friday highs from across Alabama.

The 105F at Tuscaloosa smashed the old record for the date of 102F.

With temperatures today expected to exceed those of yesterday by a couple of degrees, some records are in jeopardy across Central Alabama today. Here are the records for today and forecasted high temperatures.

Muscle Shoals broke their record for June 29th yesterday with 107F, but surprisingly Huntsville didn’t with 106F. Their previous record for the date was 108F in 1931.

Here are yesterday’s records across the country.

Washington DC hit 104F to establish a record for the date. Not surprising that the big derecho made it all the way into the Atlantic last evening, crossing over the DC area. In fact areas from Philly to Raleigh were under several contiguous severe thunderstorm warnings are one point last night. Over 800 severe weather reports yesterday. That’s a lot.

It was 98F at LaGuardia. Miami even got in on the act, tying their record for the date with 93F.

Of particular note, Nashville set an all time record high for any date yesterday, with 109F. This broke the previous record of 107F on July 27th and 28th back in 1952. Columbia SC did the same, hitting 109F, breaking their all time daily record of 107F. Chattanooga tied their all time record high with 106F. Charlotte tied their all time record high with 104F. Other cities that got in on the all time record high parade included:

Crossville TN 102F (broke previous daily record by 10 degrees!)
Fort Wayne IN tied with 106F
Jackson KY 104F (“obliterated” record for the date of 92F)

Several June records were established as well, including 106F at Evansville IN. St. Louis established their June record on Thursday with 108F.
